Just wanted to say that for anyone here who was impatiently searching for freshly-posted-but-old responses to columns, the oldest such column is the one from Dec. 21. Then you would check all the more recent ones’ responses.

Anyway, I wanted to say that the trouble is that unless you make kids volunteer at soup kitchens or shelters every week, telling them to count their blessings can be near-futile, since to a kid, the only blessings worth counting are those that almost no kid in the neighborhod has. Example: I’d bet that in the early 1950s, when half of all American households had TVs, telling kids to be grateful for having one in the house didn’t cut it very well. Especially if they had siblings to fight with over it.
