Today’s Parenting Tip

Talk to your kids about YOU.

We’re told to ask our kids about them and their day. And that’s great. We want our kids talking to us. However, “parents need to discuss their own lives and experiences” Alvin Rosenfeld, a Manhattan-based child psychiatrist who studies family interactions recently told Jeff Zaslow of the Wall Street Journal.

Rosenfeld says too many family conversations are all about the kids! He notes we live in the most educated generation of parents ever – so why do all the discussions focus on the children and their activities and schedules?

Because we live in a dangerously child-centric world. Rosenfeld says, “In America today, life often begins with the anointing of His Majesty, the Fetus.” ( Let the raising of the little narcissist begin!)

When was the last time your children said to you “mom, dad, how was your day – what did YOU do?” I’m with Rosenfeld – parents need to talk to their kids about their own work, passions, about “politics, business, world events.”

This is just one small but important way to teach kids the world doesn’t revolve around them.

Happy parenting.
