Radio Show - Can We Americans Stop with the Personal Debt, Already?

Hi friends - I hope you’ll tune into the radio show today when I talk to financial adviser David Briggs about Americans and our increasing personal debt load. He offers two quick and immediate ways to change the way we think about money that I KNOW will change my financial life. You won’t want to miss them. I’ve also got some items for the “Hart Beat” section of the show which no one else is talking about. That’s AM1160/WYLL Chicago, noon Sunday (central time) or streaming live at wyll.com. Monday you can get the audio here, and later in the week a podcast from NationalReview.com.

As always, thanks for stopping by, and keep those e-mails coming! Even when I can’t respond to them all, I read and appreciate each one.

The American Family and Debt (First Comes Love, then Comes Marriage. . . . )

. . .Then comes crushing debt? So it seems. You may have seen this piece on the cover of Sunday’s New York Times. I’ll be talking about this issue on the radio show this week (Sunday, AM1160, WYLL Chicago) with savvy financial adviser David Briggs. A former longtime executive with G.E., he now heads the Stewardship Ministry at Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington, Illinois. And he’ll be talking about the greatest financial fears and problems people bring to him - and how to think more successfully about money in a financially very unsettling time. I hope you’ll tune in!

Americans and Personal Debt - the New Normal?

As always, I have lots of good stuff to talk about in the “Hart Beat” section of the show, too!

Meanwhile, thanks to all the folks stopping by for the first time from “The Laura Ingraham” show. I love getting your feedback - thanks for all the e-mails.

When Baby Won’t Stop Crying. . .

Hi friends - know anybody with a baby that just won’t stop crying? Is it colic, or something Pepcid might help? Today’s Wall Street Journal says it might be worth asking the baby’s doctor that question!

Radio Show - An Over-Tethered Generation

Hi Friends - I hope you’ll listen in to the radio show today (noon, WYLL/AM1160 Chicago) when I talk with Meredith O’Brien, author of “A Suburban Mom: Notes from the Asylum,” and Chris Thurber, a psychologist and researcher with the American Camping Association. What is this with moms and dads being the ones who can’t let go? Dr. Thurber talks a lot about the importance of kids being given “opportunities for challenge” - but it doesn’t appear we parents are as willing to do that as we should be, and there are repercussions.

Also, lost of family news to go over too - I hope you’ll tune in, listen to the show here tomorrow, or get a podcast from NationalReview.com.

As always, thanks for stopping by.

“Hello Muddah! Hellow Faddah! I am Here at, Camp Grenada. . . “

Hi friends - here’s a really interesting piece from Nancy Gibbs and TIME magazine - it seems it’s the moms and dads who don’t want to let go of their kids when it comes time for summer camp. Having their kids hide cell phones from the counselors so the kids can continue “texting” mom and dad? Ouch!

I’ll be talking about this issue on the radio show this week (Sunday, AM1160/WYLL Chicago, noon - 1:00 central time) with a researcher from the American Camping Association - wow does he have insights on how things have changed.

“Over-tethered” parents and summer camp is also the subject of my column this week, which I’ll post tomorrow.

Here’s why I’m focusing on all this this week - 3 of my 4 kids leave for camp this weekend. (FYI - I can’t wait!)

It’s Not Your Father’s Summer Camp

Teens and Abusive Dating Relationships

Hi friends - I thought you’d like to see this article on teens who are abused in dating relationships. Yet another reason to discourage teens from intense romantic hook-ups: there is more and more evidence that abusive relationships are increasingly common. If you do allow your teens to date, here are warning signs of abuse to look for:

Teens and Dating Abuse

I’ll be touching on this topic in the “parenting news” section of my radio show this week, Sunday at noon on AM1160, WYLL Chicago (www.wyll.com). I hope you’ll listen in!
