Column - The Wall Street Journal, Teens, and Romance

Here’s this week’s column, responding to a piece in the Wall Street Journal by Sue Shellenbarger, on teens and dating. I think on this one, a lot of parents get bogged down in the details, and miss the big picture. I’m not saying what I offer is “foolproof” - just that it’s a principle that might offer some protection to my kids. I know, as a single mom, it’s protected me in my own relationships.

Radio Show - Bringing Up Geeks!

Hi Friends - as you may know by now, “It Takes a Parent” is moving to its new, one hour slot starting Sunday, July 6th. You’ll be able to hear us every week from noon to 1:00. We are very excited about the expanded show. The first program will feature Kathleen Parker, author of the book “Save the Males” - she’ll be on with Jessica DeGroot of the Third Path Institute who says forget save the males, at least when it comes to “traditional” men, that in fact guys and gals need to blend roles when it comes to work, parenting, and home chores more than they ever have!

Well we are getting ready for the expanded show, so this week’s broadcast of “It Takes a Parent” - the last in the Thursday slot - will feature a rebroadcast of an interview with the terrific Marybeth Hicks, author of “Bringing Up Geeks” (hint: it’s a good thing!) which originally aired March 6th.

Hi Friends - so, what do you think? Do married women have more childcare and household responsibilities because, in general, they want it that way — or because that’s the way it is? This is NOT to say there isn’t a lot of conflict in individual households over this issue - but en masse, do we women really want to share 50/50?

We’re getting ready for the new show, so this week’s show is a reairing of a really good program in January with Lee Hotz on how we are built for optimism - how do we exercise that inclination more regularly? (Hint: I’m definitely more for being a “parent over shoulder” than Neil is.) We’ll also touch on the Skenazy piece from yesterday’s post. Hi friends - today producer Lynne and I talk to Kirk Cameron. You will remember him as a teen heartthrob and star of the 1980s and early ’90s show, “Growing Pains.” Kirk became a Christian in his teens, and has been battling the secular Hollywood culture ever since! He has a terrific book out called, “Still Growing,” and his experience being an open Christian in the Hollywood culture is what today’s show is all about.
